What am I missing in 'Midnight Cowboy'?

I've been out of film study for a few years now, but it ain't happenin'. I have to imagine I just lack the context -- pretty racy for '69, couple of leading men in unique roles. (Thank god it was in color, uhh. [kidding])

Update: I'm moving to Connecticut next month to start a new job with NBC Sports. DC was rockin' with Mike and Sherm, the bike gang will disband, but I'm fairly psyched to be writing about the Winter Olympics for the next few months.
